JOHN FLETCHER ASSUMES NEW ROLE
AS HEAD OF PROVIDENCE HEALTH SYSTEM’S WASHINGTON REGION

May 27, 2005

PORTLAND, Ore. – John Fletcher, chief administrative officer for Providence Health System in Oregon, has accepted the position of vice president and chief executive for the system’s Washington Region. Fletcher replaces Greg Van Pelt, who became PHS’ senior vice president and chief regional operations officer in February. Fletcher will assume his new role on June 13.

Fletcher will be responsible for operations and growth of Providence hospitals and clinics in Washington, Providence Senior and Community Services and Providence Washington Regional Services. In addition, he will oversee HealthServicesNW, the organization that handles patient billing for Providence hospitals in Washington and Alaska, and Swedish Health Services.

In making the announcement, Van Pelt said, “John was selected for his commitment to the Providence mission, his knowledge of hospital operations and service line management, his proven track record of leadership development and positive physician relations, his expertise in strategic thinking and business development, and his passion for patient safety and clinical excellence.”

One of Fletcher’s most notable achievements in Oregon was leading the formation of the Providence Heart Institute, one of the foremost cardiac centers in the world. His advocacy and passion around integration of services also resulted in a health system that is now nationally recognized for its demonstrated success in quality and cost savings.

John began his career at Providence in 1983 as director of the Heart Center at Providence Portland Medical Center. In 1987, he became executive director of the Heart Institute at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. The next year, he was also named assistant administrator of program development at Providence St. Vincent. Fletcher became regional director of program development in 1993 and then served as regional director of Health Services Integration before being promoted to chief administrative officer in Oregon in 2001.

“I am so humbled to have this opportunity,” said Fletcher. “Providence is much more than a career for me. I’m come to realize it is my vocation, part of my very being. I am excited about this new opportunity and the possibilities it presents to further the mission of Providence Health System.”

Fletcher has a master’s degree in business administration from Portland State University in Oregon and a bachelor of science degree from the University of Nebraska.
