PROVIDENCE ADDRESSES WOMEN’S ISSUES
THOUGH CLASSES AND SERVICES

HOOD RIVER, Ore. – Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital recognizes the need to provide health information and services that address the unique needs of women. A series of seminars about common health issues will be held at the Education Center at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital, from April 14 through May 15. Those interested may register for these seminars through Hood River County Community Education, (541) 386-2055.

“Women often overlook their own health concerns due to daily demands,” said Robin Henson, M.D., Providence Hood River Women’s Clinic. “Our goal is to empower women to take charge of their health by providing education and top notch services right here in the Gorge.” Providence has a wide range of medical experts to offer both classes and services on women’s health and wellness - from PMS to pampering, diabetes to depression, healthy skin to a healthy heart. Information, diagnosis and treatment for women of the Columbia Gorge, is available, close to home, at Providence Hood River.

Women’s Health Speaker Series – Open to the community

Cause and Treatment of Varicose Veins
WHAT: A free community forum.
WHEN: 6:30 to 8 p.m., Monday, April 14, 2008
WHERE: Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital, Education Center

DETAILS: Summer is coming, and time for our legs to come out of hiding. Varicose veins are a painful, unsightly condition, more common among women age 30 or older and those that stand or walk for long periods of time. There are a variety of treatment options available. Providence general surgeon David Maccabee, M.D., will discuss the condition and available treatments, including the Closure®, a minimally invasive varicose vein treatment he provides on an outpatient basis. This procedure offers minimal down time, is performed quickly in the office and may be covered by insurance.

Choosing a Birth Attendant in the 21st Century
WHAT: A free community forum.

DETAILS: Get the latest information on the choices you have for a birthing attendant. Providence women’s clinic certified midwife Michele Bouche, C.N.M., will discuss available options for pregnancy and birthing, levels of midwifery care, physician care, pain management options and abnormal fear of childbirth.

Your Best Face Forward: Skin Management Options
WHAT: A free community forum.
WHEN: 5:30 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 6, 2008
WHERE: Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital, Education Center

DETAILS: Concerned about fine lines and wrinkles on your face and neck? Wondering about Botox, Restylane, Radiance, facial peels and other skin resurfacing choices? Local skin care expert and facial cosmetic surgeon Mendy Maccabee, M.D., will explain how various products and procedures work, and what options are now available in our community.

Preparing for the birth of your baby
WHAT: A series of classes to educate and support expectant parents.
WHEN: Series of five classes offered – same topics for each series
      - 6 to 9:30 p.m., May 7, 14, 21, 28, June 4
      - 6 to 9:30 p.m., June 25, July 2, 9, 16, 23
      - 6 to 9:30 p.m., August 13, 20, 27, Sept. 3
WHERE: Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital, Education Center

DETAILS: Choose between a five-session beginner course and a two-session refresher class. Learn about prenatal care, labor/delivery breathing and relaxation, newborn care, breastfeeding and parenting of a new baby. A free breastfeeding class also is available.

Surgical Weight Loss Options
WHAT: A free community forum
WHEN: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, May 15, 2008
WHERE: Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital, Education Center

DETAILS: This class is for people who are significantly overweight and have tried and failed at dieting and medical weight loss programs. Please talk with your primary care doctor about whether or not surgical weight loss may be an option for you. Bariatric surgeon David Maccabee, M.D., will talk about the lap band and the gastric bypass as options for weight.
