Workshops Set for Care-Givers of Children with Disabilities
08/17/07
Parents, friends and caregivers of children with disabilities are invited to two special workshops on Tuesday, August 28th. Both of the free programs are offered by Providence Swindells Center at Hood River in partnership with the Lifespan Respite Care Network of Hood River and Wasco Counties and The Arc of the Mid-Columbia.
The first workshop, titled "Record Keeping: My Child's Life Care Notebook & Organizer," runs from 6:00 - 6:30 PM. "Caregivers will learn how the Notebook can help them get a handle on all those records they've been meaning to organize," says Diane Bungum, workshop presenter and outreach coordinator for The Swindells Center at Hood River. The notebook/organizer is provided at no charge.
The second workshop, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM, called "A Care Giving Break for Family Members/A Paid Opportunity for Others," is both for families looking for a few hours off and for individuals interested in employment as paid care-providers. Learn why taking a break is important for family members and how employment as a paid caregiver can work for others. Linda Carroll, Lifespan Respite Care Network coordinator, serving Hood River and Wasco County, will show participants how Lifespan can help match families and paid caregivers.
The Swindells Center at Hood River is a satellite office of the Jean Baton Swindells Resource Center for Children and Families in Portland. It serves as a no-cost resource specifically for parents and family members who have children with disabilities. The Center offers a lending library, parent education and speaker events, as well as a very useful Care Notebook and Organizer.
The Swindells Center works with each family to match them with the best resources. The staff works in partnership with other organizations to help make a difference for families and not duplicate services.
Swindells at Hood River is located in the Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital's Health Services Building on May Street. For information about the center, or the free workshops, call Diane Bungum, 541-387-8920, or e-mail diane.bungum@providence.org. The Swindells Center web site is www.providence.org/childcenter.
