Cardiovascular Rehabilitation

Cardiac rehabilitation is a medically supervised program to help heart patients recover quickly and improve their overall physical and mental functioning. The goal is to reduce the risk of another cardiac event or to keep an already present heart condition from getting worse. We offer an:

Inpatient Program
While you are still a hospital patient, the registered nurse will help you to begin to increase your activity levels within your own safe limits. The nurse will also help you and your family better understand heart disease, risk factor modification and provide appropriate discharge instructions.

Outpatient Conditioning and Education
With the consent of your physician, you may begin the outpatient-conditioning phase of your rehabilitation usually within two weeks after your hospital discharge following heart attack, surgery or other treatment for CAD.

You will attend three exercise therapy sessions a week, generally for 12 weeks. Activities are carefully selected, taking into account your current health level. You’ll learn about:

- Normal heart function
- Heart disease
- Healing process
- Warning signs of heart disease
- Reducing risk factors
- Medications
- Managing stress
A nutritional consultation with a registered dietician will teach you how to:

- Read food labels
- Make healthy food choices when eating out
- Plan and prepare healthy meals
- Eat healthy snacks
We will work with you to help meet your individual needs for continued physical and psychological well-being and vocational performance. We’ll encourage greater independence and provide:

- Monitoring of your exercise
- Progress of risk factor reduction
- Group support
To ensure a program is medically appropriate for you, referral from your physician is required to participate. If financial assistance is needed, please contact the Cardiovascular Conditioning Center for more information.
