Ray "Chop" Yasui, a Hood River orchardist for many years, was a victim of heart attack and kidney failure. He would have been forced to make the trip to Portland for dialysis three times a week, but his daughter-in-law, Maija Yasui, learned to do the dialysis treatment in his home. While he was ill, he researched the number of people in the Gorge who would benefit from such a center being in Hood River. After his death on April 6, 1989, Maija spearheaded the fund-raising efforts that enabled Ray's dream to become a reality in Hood River.
