Glossary

Ambulatory infusion suite
A clinic setting where infusion services are provided without the patient being admitted to a hospital or other medical facility and for the patient, often a preferred environment to receive their infusion therapy.  Providence Infusion and Pharmacy Services has ambulatory infusion suites in Everett, Seattle, and Olympia. 

Disease state management
A process of integrating patient care for a specific diagnosis with the intention of minimizing disease progression.

Infusion
The slow intravenous injection of a therapeutic fluid into the body.

Infusion pump
A device that moves a therapeutic fluid into the body under controlled pressure.

Investigational drugs
Investigational drugs are promising new drugs made available to desperately ill patients through clinical studies designed to assess the drug’s immediate and long-term safety and effectiveness. 

Plan of Care
A Plan of Care is a dynamic tool that changes as patient outcomes to treatment are explored; it is intended to help the patient achieve an optimum level of functioning and health.  Care planning is a collaborative, multidisciplinary process that includes the patient, family/caregiver, and healthcare team.  At Providence Infusion and Pharmacy Services, the healthcare team includes a pharmacist, nurse, and dietitian.

Total parenteral nutrition
The provision of partial or total nutrient requirements introduced into the body intravenously.
