Safe Crossings holds four seasonal gatherings, several workshops and support groups and a memorial service for friends and families to say goodbye to departed loved ones. Our Quarterly Gatherings are for all children, teens and their friends and families, each with its own special activity. We also offer rituals to create meaningful and tangible keepsakes for remembrance in honor our love and grief. Through rituals and sharing stories, we get to know each other, find and give support, and come to understand and embrace the grieving process. Quarterly Gatherings Our Winter Bonfire is a heart-and-soul warming gathering. At Alki beach, we create special hearts with the name of our departed loved one and say some reflective words or prayers in our Saying Goodbye ritual. Our Welcoming Summer Gathering is held in June at the Luther Burbank Park on Mercer Island where we acknowledge the coming of summer, and reflect on how families, like seasons, can change. At our Summer Picnic in August, everyone gathers at Newcastle Park with a tasty picnic basket and participates in an offering of the Rose Petal Ritual at the lake, leaving the water bright and gleaming with floating red and yellow rose petals. During our Autumn Nature Walk at the Washington Park Arboretum, we walk together and appreciate the vibrant oranges and yellows of the changing trees, acknowledging that each and every one of us is a part of nature. Workshops, Services and Support Groups Our Parent/Child Grief Groups meet for six weeks in the Winter, Spring and Fall. Children meet together to share their experiences and feelings through talking, playing and art activities. Concurrently, parents meet in a separate area to explore and understand their personal grief as well as find ways to support their children. For more information, please call 206-749-7723. Mother’s Day Workshop – May: For children who have experienced the death of their mother, grandmother or special mother figure. Father’s Day Workshop – June: For children who have experienced the death of their father, grandfather, or father figure. Pediatric Memorial Service: An international Children’s Memorial Day, which occurs every year on the second Sunday of December and is observed internationally. Families around the world light candles at 7 p.m. in their corresponding time zones. As candles burn down in one time zone, they are lit in the next, creating a 24-hour wave of light that encircles the globe. This 24-hour period of candle-light is a remembrance ritual in honor of the children we have lost, the children who lived and died and who continue to live in our hearts. We can also help guide you to resources outside of hospice that might better meet your needs. Please feel free to call 206-749-7723 for more information about any of these services and gatherings.
