Stories from the Heart

Providence Marianwood offers a state-of-the-art Recreation Program. Our Program constantly evolves, incorporating proven therapies that improve not only a person's physical health, but their spirits as well. Recent additions to our program include Qi Gong, one-on-one music therapy, and our very own Red Hat Society.

Residents have access to Web-TV, the Internet, e-mail (personal e-mail accounts set up on request), computer games, VCRs, and DVDs.

Individual Assessments
A licensed/certified Recreation Therapist assesses each resident individually to determine what kind of interactions, therapies, exercise and activities might best meet their needs. This includes a brief psycho/social assessment, including hobbies, interests, spiritual preferences, short-term and long-term goals, support systems and more. It also includes alertness levels, memory issues, social involvement, etc. Therapies are recommended accordingly, such as music therapy, one-on-one visits, laughter therapy, various exercise programs, cooking, gardening and crafts. Re-assessments are made on an ongoing basis and recommendations are adjusted.

Marianwood’s Spiritual Care team is skilled at listening to people and supporting all spiritual belief systems. Both chaplains are ordained ministers in the Christian tradition but both have worked extensively with people from diverse religious backgrounds. For those who need the solace of their own religious leaders, calls will be made and appropriate support sought. Marianwood offers many ecumenical worship services.

About the Chaplains

Johann Neethling is Marianwood's Chaplain. He is married to Anne, his beloved bride of 39 years and is the father of three beautiful married daughters, and grandfather to five exceptional grandkids. Johann is an ordained United Methodist minister, and a Board Certified Chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplains. He possesses a M.Div. from Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa, and a M.A. in Counseling from Webster University. Johann was born and raised in South Africa, where he was ordained in 1975 and pastored rural and city congregations till 1986 when he and his family moved to the United States. In this country he has served churches in Indiana, Texas, New Mexico, and Washington. He has served 8 years as chaplain in private school settings with diverse ethnic and religious student bodies, and has operated as volunteer chaplain in hospitals in Indiana, Texas and Washington. Until December 2006 he served as volunteer chaplain to the new Swedish Issaquah Emergency Department.
Mary Brown is Marianwood's Assistant Chaplain. Mary graduated from the United Methodist seminary School of Theology at Claremont in 1990 with a Masters of Divinity (MDiv) degree. She was the pastor at the Snoqualmie United Methodist Church from 1990 to 2000. Mary has been working as Pastoral Care Assistant at Marianwood since 2003.

Chapel

The Chapel is a place of prayer, solitude and comfort for all who seek a place to be still. It is an expression of the faith, hope and love that is the foundation of all that is Marianwood.

The stained glass window was created by Jill and Robert Hill, local artists who specialize in stained glass. The door, altar, tabernacle, tables, podium, cross, candlesticks, as well as the window and door frames, were all carved by a master artisan, Roberto Tacki. It took nearly two years of woodcarving to complete the pieces.

Resident Council
Providence Marianwood’s Resident Council meets in order to allow residents to make meaningful decisions, guarantee continual improvement of services, and hold the facility accountable to the residents. This is a right guaranteed by OBRA Federal law as follows: "right of residents to organize and participate in groups in the facility."

The residents are the officers and decide which staff attend the monthly meetings. At PMW, residents have asked that recreation and social service staff assist with organizing the meetings and taking minutes. All residents are welcome to attend and are given an agenda and minutes.

Our Resident Council sponsors a monthly popcorn sale and use the proceeds for service projects such as supporting the Snoqualmie tribe food bank or sending donations for tsunami relief. They also sponsor events such as the annual pet food drive for the Humane Society. The Council improves the quality of life for other residents by giving the facility feedback and suggestions related to care, food service and activities. Residents often choose a speaker to inform them of topics of interest, such as having someone from the Ombudsman’s office.

If you would like to obtain more information please call 425-391-2800 and ask for our Social Work department.
