Bringing Generations Together In A Unique Environment The Intergenerational Learning Center (ILC) is an award-winning child care program unique to Seattle in two distinct ways: (1) interaction between the Mount's residents and children is an integral part of daily activities and (2) each child's program is based on a problem-solving philosophy. ILC accepts children between six weeks and six years (pre-kindergarten).
All children are welcome. We provide an anti-bias program and child care in an intergenerational setting for all regardless of race, sex, national origin, religion, special ability or sexual orientation. For more information on enrollment and current openings, please call (206) 938-6195.
Our Changing Society Our society has changed so much over the past few years. The family structure is not what it was a generation ago. Today there are rising numbers of single parent families; increasing economic pressures for two-income families; diminishing influence of the extended family; growing need for quality day care for both children and adults; and evidence that individuals are living longer. Society also has become much more mobile. It is not uncommon for children to live thousands of miles from their grandparents with only occasional visits. The "Birth" Of ILC In 1991, Providence Mount St. Vincent opened the Intergenerational Learning Center (ILC), a licensed child care center located within the building and open to both the community and employees. The Mount realized the enormous potential for benefits to participants--the residents, the children, their parents, clients of the adult day program, the staff, volunteers, and the community as a whole.
The Mount's entire facility has been licensed for child care meaning that activities and programs can take place throughout the building and campus and not be restricted to one certain area. This enhances the opportunities for children and residents to interact.
How The Children and Residents Benefit The ILC has become an integral part of the vision and mission offered by the Mount. Intergenerational care offers children: - Opportunities to learn about the normal aging process;
- Ability to accept people with disabilities;
- Chance to become part of an extended family;
- Help in reducing fear of older adults; and
- Unconditional and unbounded love and attention.
In addition, residents and clients: - Receive emotional support;
- Gain a sense of self-worth;
- Are motivated to participate in physical activity;
- Have an opportunity to transfer knowledge; and
- Serve as role models.
In addition, children bring spirit, joy, and laughter to many lonely residents who raised their families long ago. For Providence Mount St. Vincent, the Intergenerational Learning Center has provided an opportunity to develop a more holistic approach to care connected to the natural cycles of life.
With planned activities and programs provided five days a week, the children and residents have many opportunities to interact, sing, and play resulting in mutual benefit. For both groups, this may be the only time they are involved with someone who is two generations apart. The bond between them is truly special.
Problem-Solving Is A Vital Part of Our Curriculum In a problem-solving atmosphere, children are encouraged to think of solutions to problems that arise throughout their day, with their teachers acting as facilitators and guides. When children are learning that they are capable of solving problems, the teacher is neither permissive or authoritarian. Children are trusted and encouraged by teachers to resolve problems that may occur in their environment, with materials and in their relationships. In addition, the children must take responsibility for their actions. Four Program Areas Nurture Your Child Through the Early Years The ILC is divided into four program areas: - Infants--one to 12 months. Adult to child ratio 1:3. Our infant room is comprised of two spacious, light rooms that allow babies to freely explore and experience through their senses sounds, textures, visual images and the use of their bodies to enhance all forms of development. Infant schedules are specific to the individual babies.
Babies, escorted by the teachers, visit residents often. Clearly one of our most popular activities! Residents of the Mount are always welcome to visit and can be seen often in the baby room.
- Young Toddlers, Rm 1--one and two-year-olds. Adult to child ratio 1:4. This group of 12 toddlers has ample opportunity to use their emerging physical abilities like climbing, running, using manipulative skills, emptying out bags and purses, painting with sponges, playing with dolls and house hold items, looking at books, and splashing in water. Young toddlers go on "friendly visits" throughout the Mount while riding in a large red wagon pulled by their teachers;
- Intergenerational Family Room, Rm 2--18 months to 24 months. 14 children with 3 fulltime staff. Our newest room, located between two nursing center neighborhoods, gives two-year-old toddlers the opportunity to be very close to residents. This is truly a shared space between residents and children. Residents use this room for special activities as well as visiting with toddlers.
- Older Toddlers--2 and 3-year-olds. 14 children with 3 fulltime staff. The transition year from toddlerhood to childhood is full of opportunity to learn about oneself. Our children gain in their abilities to do things on their own, investigating a rich environment for their imaginations, cognitive abilities and physical development. They have both structured and unstructured time with residents. The older toddlers may have sing-a-long time, craft activities and friendly visits accompanied by their teachers as they go throughout the building;
- Pre-Schoolers--three to five-year-olds. Adult to child ratio 1:7. Our two preschool rooms are large and spacious for groups of 20 children. Each group has regular activities with residents allowing everyone involved to enjoy time together, learn new skills and take part in interesting activities. They may do cooking, crafts, singing and art throughout the year. The children and residents also take part in a structured art studio and music activities, both led by specialists. Both groups take part in our art studio with residents and sing in intergenerational sing-a-longs. The children also go on field trips throughout the year. The curriculum flows from the needs and interests of children, teachers, families and others and is in accordance with the children's developmental needs.
Each area has its own professional staff with the goal of facilitating relationships among the many generations who live, work, and are cared for at Providence Mount St. Vincent.
Variety of Fees and Schedules Are Offered There are a variety of fee schedules available, ranging from full time to part time (full days, two to three days per week). Financial assistance is available to eligible parents through the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) and the Seattle Department of Human Resources. Intergenerational Activity Courtyard Through the generosity of individuals and foundations, the Mount has been able to build a unique outdoor courtyard for children to play and residents to watch and enjoy the spectacular view of downtown Seattle. Designed specifically for the children and residents, the courtyard includes creative play spaces, wandering trike trails, sand boxes, and small spaces for those wanting privacy. The courtyard also features a large gazebo for activities and parties. The Intergenerational Activity Courtyard is the first of its kind in the nation.
