Background
Just before Christmas 1995, the owner of Vashon Island's only nursing home, an aging farmhouse from the 1930's, was about to close the facility due to rising costs and increased regulations, sending its 36 residents to various sites in other communities. The Vashon community rallied to save the home and keep the residents on the island, close to friends and family.
Concerned community members started a phone tree, generating interest and funds to help save the nursing home. Thirty islanders came forward who were willing to loan up to $10,000 each, if needed, to guarantee a lease. This group of volunteers formed a nonprofit organization to keep the facility open. Due to the condition of the aging farmhouse, state regulators informed this group that the building needed to be replaced or closed within 5 years. This band of dedicated volunteer board members rose to the challenge of keeping a home for Vashon's seniors on the island.
The board of directors enlisted the help of Providence Health System, who, because of their mission of helping the poor and impressed with the Vashon Community's caring and involvement, gave unlimited consulting time, and loans to purchase the property and begin planning for a new facility that would better meet the needs of the Vashon-Maury Island community. The board contracted with Providence Mount St. Vincent, one of the best long-term care facilities in the country, to manage the nursing home.
After much work and fundraising, our beautiful new building opened in August 2001. Vashon Community Care Center now encompasses a 40 apartment assisted living program, a 30 bed nursing home, and a 5 day a week adult day health care program. Over 60 volunteers visit with residents, provide entertainment, assist with gardening, and help with the variety of programs that VCCC provides. The new Vashon Community Care Center is a shining example of what a community can do when people work together for a common good.
