A Community Partner for Five Decades

  • For nearly two years, Providence Holy Cross has worked with the local community to help develop the new South Addition.  Providence Holy Cross held community meetings at the hospital.  In addition, Providence Holy Cross representatives have made presentations to the Mission Hills Neighborhood Council.
  • Community feedback included concerns regarding the project’s impact on parking, traffic and the environment.  To ensure a safe and positive experience for Providence Holy Cross neighbors, several measures would be taken to minimize any impacts to parking, traffic and the environment.  These measures include:
    • Paying for the design and construction of an improved signaling system at Rinaldi Street and Laurel Canyon Boulevard.
    • Reducing parking fees to $2 a day to ensure visitors park on the medical center campus rather than on neighboring streets.
    • Working to acquire additional parking lot space.  Providence Holy Cross currently has nearly 1,000 parking spaces, which is well above the 710 spaces legally required for a 355-licensed bed facility.
  • Providence Holy Cross applauds the Mission Hills Neighborhood Council and the community for being so pro-active in the development of this patient care facility.  Providence Holy Cross is committed to providing community updates and to listening to any concerns.
  • Our mission states, “As People of Providence, we reveal God’s love for all, especially the poor and vulnerable, through our compassionate service.”  Therefore, much of our focus is to ensure that these vulnerable populations receive special care.
  • Providence Holy Cross services a significant uninsured population.  It is a Medi-Cal Disproportionate Share Hospital (DSH), in which more than a quarter of all patients are considered low income and qualify for Medi-Cal. Nearly 40 percent of the trauma patients are uninsured.
  • Providence Holy Cross has the third busiest private trauma center in the county, servicing annually more than 1,400 victims of shootings, car accidents and other major trauma.
  • Of the 10 private trauma centers in Los Angeles County, Providence Holy Cross is the only one with an open catchment area – Meaning, Providence Holy Cross cares for all trauma victims regardless of where they live or where an accident or shooting occurs -- as long as they can be transported to Providence Holy Cross within 30 minutes, either by air or by ground emergency transportation.  Providence Holy Cross services trauma victims from Lake Mead to the Antelope Valley and from Kern County to Ventura County.
  • In the Northeast San Fernando Valley, a high percentage of pregnant women are diabetic or have temporary gestational diabetes.  One out of every eight women who gives birth at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center has diabetes.  This chronic illness often leads to high-risk births in which the child is born premature or has other complications.  To serve these women and their newborns, Providence Holy Cross proposes to build a much-needed 12-bed neonatal intensive care unit in the new South Addition.
