Doing What is Right for the Environment |
| |
- Providence Holy Cross Medical Center cares for more than patients. As a member of the community, it also cares for its neighbors and the environment. One of Providence Holy Cross Medical Center’s five core values is Stewardship, which is defined as “striving to care wisely for our people, our resources and our earth.” With this in mind, Providence Holy Cross is committed to building an environmentally-friendly patient care South Addition.
- The new 101-bed patient care South Addition will receive a LEED Certification. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Grand Building Rating SystemTM is the nationally accepted benchmark for environmentally-conscious design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.
- Only three hospitals in the nation are currently LEED certified.
- Providence Holy Cross added $500,000 in design costs to the building to ensure environmentally-friendly designs during construction and after the South Addition opens. These include:
- During Construction:
- Ultra low sulfur diesel and/or alternative diesel formulations will be used on construction vehicles to emit less diesel exhaust.
- Recycled-content materials will be used during construction.
- Construction and demolition waste recycling.
- Construction-phase indoor air quality plan.
- Construction-phase outdoor air quality plan.
- Once the South Addition Opens:
- The new South Addition will use natural daylight to illuminate interiors. High-efficiency “super” T8 fluorescent lighting will be used as supplemental lighting.
- Water-efficient irrigation.
- Landscaping, site paving and roofing elements will reduce the “heat island effect,” lowering outdoor temperatures, thereby reducing energy costs.
- High performance glazing, sunshades and increased insulation will reduce energy costs.
- Energy-efficient central plant and primary building equipment that is AQMD compliant.
- Low-emitting materials to improve indoor air quality.
- The expansion project qualifies for design incentives from the Southern California Gas Company’s “Savings by Design” program, which employs various energy efficient mechanical, electrical and building strategies. Providence Holy Cross will also seek an “Energy Star” designation.
- Providence Holy Cross has a history of caring for the environment. In 2005, Providence Holy Cross was the only hospital in Los Angeles County to receive a Waste Reduction Award Program honor from the California Integrated Waste Management Board for its recycling program.
