Your chances of successful treatment are better when cancer is found early.
All men are at risk, but more than 70 percent of men diagnosed with prostate cancer each year are over the age of 65. African American men have a higher risk of prostate cancer than white men. Men at highest risk, including African-American men and men with a father or brother diagnosed before age 65, should begin testing at age 45. Men with multiple relatives affected at an early age may be advised to begin testing at age 40. Otherwise, both the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and digital rectal examination (DRE) may be recommended annually beginning at age 50.
