Diagnosis and Treatment Services

At the Providence Regional Cancer Centers, we provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to care that enables our patients to benefit from the combined skills and experience of our medical experts.  Our specialized team includes board-certified medical, surgical and radiation oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, hematologists, pathologists, technicians and therapists, award winning oncology nurses, researchers, physical and personal rehabilitation therapists, nutritionists, as well as social workers and spiritual care providers.

Diagnosis
Diagnosis of cancer may include a medical history and physical examination, as well as x-rays, blood tests and imaging scans.  In addition, you may need to have a sample taken of the lump or abnormal area, which is known as a biopsy. The biopsy sample is then analyzed in a laboratory and the cells examined so that the doctors can see exactly what type of cancer it is and whether it is likely to grow slowly or more quickly.  Additionally, scans can measure the size of the cancer and whether it has spread to other tissues or nearby lymph glands (nodes). This process is called "staging" the cancer. Once the type and stage of the cancer is known, your multidisciplinary team will decide how best to treat it.

Treatment
Recommended treatment will be customized for each patient based on a variety of factors, and may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or other therapies and support services. Additionally, cancer treatment guidelines now recommend adjuvant therapies following surgery for many types of cancer.
