Gynecologic Cancer Treatment Services
Specialized care for ovarian, cervical, uterine, vaginal, fallopian tube cancers.

Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer forms in tissues of the cervix (the organ connecting the uterus and vagina). It is usually a slow-growing cancer that may not have symptoms but can be found with regular Pap tests (a procedure in which cells are scraped from the cervix and looked at under a microscope).   According to the National Cancer Institute, precancerous changes and early cancers of the cervix generally do not cause pain or other symptoms. It is important not to wait to feel pain before seeing a doctor. When the disease gets worse, women may notice one or more of these symptoms:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Bleeding that occurs between regular menstrual periods
  • Bleeding after sexual intercourse, douching, or a pelvic exam
  • Menstrual periods that last longer and are heavier than before
  • Bleeding after menopause
  • Increased vaginal discharge
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pain during sexual intercourse

A woman with any of these symptoms should tell her doctor so that problems can be diagnosed and treated as early as possible.

Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer forms in tissues of the ovary (one of a pair of female reproductive glands in which the ova, or eggs, are formed). Most ovarian cancers are either ovarian epithelial carcinomas (cancer that begins in the cells on the surface of the ovary) or malignant germ cell tumors (cancer that begins in egg cells).   According to the National Cancer Institute, symptoms may include:

  • Pressure or pain in the abdomen, pelvis, back, or legs
  • A swollen or bloated abdomen
  • Nausea, indigestion, gas, constipation, or diarrhea
  • Feeling very tired all the time
  • Less common symptoms include:
    • Shortness of breath
    • Feeling the need to urinate often
    • Unusual vaginal bleeding (heavy periods, or bleeding after menopause)

Endometrial Cancer
Endometrial cancer that forms in the tissue lining the uterus (the small, hollow, pear-shaped organ in a woman's pelvis in which a baby grows). Most endometrial cancers are adenocarcinomas (cancers that begin in cells that make and release mucus and other fluids).  According to the National Cancer Institute, uterine cancer usually occurs after menopause but may also occur around the time that menopause begins.  Abnormal vaginal bleeding is the most common symptom of uterine cancer. Women should not assume that abnormal vaginal bleeding is part of menopause.  A woman should see her doctor if she has any of the following symptoms:

  • Unusual vaginal bleeding or discharge
  • Difficult or painful urination
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Pain in the pelvic area
