MRI: New Applications, Improved Productivity & Amazing Image Quality
The new Signa EXCITE 1.5T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system from General Electric is the industry's first end-to-end design of the MRI data pipeline. Every component in the imaging chain was optimized and integrated into a new platform that provides unprecedented scanning speed and resolution for MRI applications.
This MRI platform is evolving with new technologies to
further improve clinical productivity and image quality. Additionally, the short bore Signa EXCITE is an open style MRI, making procedures more comfortable for patients who are claustrophobic.
Only EXCITE offers:
- A visible improvement in image quality with new
8-channel coils for neurovascular, spine, body and
cardiac imaging
- Breakthrough imaging techniques to enhance your
diagnostic options for stroke evaluation, peripheral
vascular imaging, breast cancer staging and other
clinical applications.
- Between 25% and 75% improvement in contrast-to-
noise ratio without time penalty
- Dramatically reduced sensitivity to patient motion.
- Reduced sensitivity to magnetic susceptibility artifacts.

Setting a New Standard in CT Diagnostic Imaging Technology
The AquilionTM 16 is at the forefront of the revolution in CT imaging and offers the ability to acquirevolumetric data at high speed with superb spatial resolution. The Aquilion multi-slice technology
dramatically improves the diagnostic efficacy of CT exams. This advanced imaging method involves the simultaneous acquisition of multiple data slices during a single rotation – increasing image resolution so smaller lesions can be detected. Aquilion represents the future of this technology by offering 16 slices, varying in widths from a half-millimeter to eight millimeters, during each half-second rotation. Because no other system can match performance like this, Aquilion offers diagnostic advantages that include:
- Better image quality
- Clearer anatomical visualization
- Improved soft tissue evaluation
- New applications with 3-D volume reconstruction
- More comprehensive diagnosis in less time
Besides improving clinical insight, Aquilion also provides a more comfortable patient experience. The high-speed scanning and accurate results ultimately offer your patients:
- Shorter exam times, which is ideal for injured or
ill patients
- Single breath-hold scanning
- Reduced x-ray exposure
- More rapid results to facilitate the treatment process
- A safe and cost-effective alternative to invasive and
diagnostic procedures
- Earlier detection of abnormalities that may not have
been seen by conventional CT

High-Throughput Whole Body PET Scanner
Known as the powerhouse in positron emission tomography (PET), the Siemens ECAT ACCEL diagnostic imaging scanner raises productivity and image quality to a new standard. ECAT ACCEL reduces whole body PET scanning time by half, while maintaining superb image quality in both oncology and cardiology applications. The reduced scanning time increases clinical efficiency, cost-effectiveness, image quality, and patient throughput and comfort levels.
Key features of the ECAT ACCEL include:
- High count rate performance
- Isotropic image resolution for outstanding image quality
- Single pass whole body scanning with attenuation
correction
- Enhanced patient comfort with superior
system ergonomics
The ECAT ACCEL can also be used for the diagnosis, initial staging or restaging of:
- Lung Cancer
- Colorectal Cancer
- Melanoma
- Lymphoma
- Esophageal
- Cancer
- Breast Cancer
- Thyroid
Additionally, the ECAT ACCEL can be used for:
- Evaluation of treatment response for breast cancer
- Evaluation of a single pulmonary nodule
- Pre-surgical evaluation of refractory seizures
- Initial study of myocardial viability prior to revascularization
- Myocardial viability following inconclusive SPECT
(single projection emitted computed tomography)

Viewing MRI, CT and PET Images Through PACS
The new Providence Saint Joseph Outpatient Diagnostic Center provides the ability to view all diagnostic images through the hospital’s picture archiving and communication system (PACS). PACS offers secured access through the Internet and provides physicians with real-time viewing of CT, MRI and PET images and patient reports — whether physicians are at the hospital, in the outpatient diagnostic center or even in their private practice office. PACS also provides an opportunity for physicians to consult on-line regarding an examination in progress, greatly enhancing communications for those delivering care.

Seamlessly Fusing MRI, CT, PET AND SPECT Images Together
Fusion software can seamlessly blend images from MRI, CT, PET and SPECT scans together, making Providence the only hospital-based center in the Valley that can do this. The fusion process matches multi-dimensional medical images to create a “fused” composite dataset, which synergistically utilizes data from MRI, CT, PET and SPECT for viewing at the Imaging Analysis Workstation at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center.
The ability to fuse images can offer physicians a more accurate diagnosis leading to improved patient care. Fusing the images also offers improved ability to analyze multiple datasets over time and quantify the degree of change between the studies.
