The laboratory provides expert consultation for a broad range of tissue biopsies and cytologic specimens. Our pathology group is comprised of only board-certified pathologists who have extensive academic backgrounds and are highly specialized.
Specialties include:
- Breast
- Cytology
- Gastroenterology
- Gynecology
- Head and Neck
- Hematopathology
- Urology
In addition, our pathologists are active in national medical school and in-house teaching programs, and they are engaged in research and educational projects. Many of them also are extensively published in their areas of specialty.
Outside consultants are retained in transfusion medicine, clinical chemistry, microbiology and molecular diagnostics from area universities and research medical centers. The laboratory maintains relationships with a variety of teaching institutions including Los Angeles County /University of Southern California Medical Center, Stanford University Medical Center and the University of Nebraska as well as with other experts throughout the country.
Pathologists are available for consultation seven days a week. When unusual, unexpected or malignant findings are encountered, a pathologist contacts the submitting physician to discuss the case. STAT results are provided by phone as soon as the results are available and critical values are provided 24 hours a day.
The quality-assurance program uses effective quality-control procedures. All gynecologic pathology cases are correlated with pap smears and with the HPV DNA testing results. Pap smears are reported using the 2001 Bethesda System, and the Providence pathologists have demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity in cytological diagnosis with 3.4 to 5.0 percent ASCUS rate. Abnormal diagnostic rates are comparable to CAP and other national statistics.
The ability to provide timely and personal service of the highest quality is what really sets the Providence Laboratory pathologists apart from other reference laboratories.
