The Art of Healing doesn't stop after surgery or initial medical intervention. Physical rehabilitation is often essential to maximize a patient's recovery and quality of life.
The Lymphedema Program offered at Providence Saint Joseph and Holy Cross Medical Centers are a comprehensive approach to management of symptoms for patients with primary or secondary lymphedema. Our therapists are specially trained in the treatment of patients with compromised lymph systems. The Lymphedema Program was established as a part of the Physical Rehabilitation services available at Providence. These services are dedicated to meeting the needs of our patients through customized treatment from experienced professional staff.
Customized approach
Our approach focuses on maximizing recovery of the patient to their highest functional lifestyle. Combining the latest in rehabilitation technology with a team approach, our rehabilitation services are uniquely responsive to the needs of each patient, family and doctor. Treatment programs are tailored around each patient's individual needs. Treatment options include:
- Manual lymphatic drainage
- Decongestive exercises
- Bandaging
- Joint mobilization
- Kinesio taping
- Custom compression garments
- Scar tissue modification/mobilization
- Activities of Daily Living skills training
- Intermittent sequential vaso-pneumatic pump
- Education in home program
The Providence Lymphedema Program can also address secondary conditions associated with lymphedema as the program works in collaboration with Outpatient Rehabilitation services and other related departments including Oncology.
Persons with lymphedema associated with the following post-acute conditions may benefit from treatment:
- Breast cancer/Other cancers
- General Surgery
- Trauma
- Milroys Disease
Program Goals
- Provide Rehabilitation therapy to determine appropriateness of care
- Assist the patient in determining realistic, individual short-term/long-term goals
- Help develop skills that will allow the patient to increase functional abilities and maximize independence
- Guide and encourage the patient to take responsibility for their rehabilitation
Outcomes
Studies have found that physical therapy is an effective treatment to decrease pain and increase function. Providence posts positive outcomes for each of its patients as measured by the Therapeutic Associates Outcomes System, including high patient improvement and patient satisfaction.
Referral
Providence is able to work with most insurance companies. A referral to the Lymphedema Program can be obtained by either contacting the Rehabilitation Department or by obtaining a prescription from your physician.
