MEDFORD, Ore (05/31/07) -- Providence Medford Medical Center has purchased the first robotic-assisted surgical program in southern Oregon and northern California. The da Vinci Surgical System will be beneficial for men who need prostate surgery and women who need gynecological procedures.
This minimally invasive technology benefits patients in several ways, including smaller incisions, less pain, quicker recovery and reduced hospital stays. “There is nothing else like this offered in the Rogue Valley,” says Tom Hanenburg, chief executive for Providence Medford Medical Center. “Previously patients would need to travel out of the area for these procedures, creating an logistical inconvenience and financial hardship.”
Surgeons make several small incisions about the length of a staple instead of one large opening. Lights, cameras and operating tools are inserted into the incisions, and the surgeon works from a computer station guiding the tools by hand.
The Providence Community Health Foundation purchased the da Vinci Surgical System for $1.6 million in April. The first surgical procedure was performed May 31.
