MEDFORD, Ore (07/29/05) -- Providence Medford Medical Center celebrates its newly designed rehabilitation therapy kitchen with a dedication ceremony and reception on Thursday, August 12 from 5:00 – 7:00pm.
The kitchen provides a setting for therapy and retraining of people who have had life-altering events, such as a stroke. “It helps people understand that despite what has happened, they can still be independent and maintain the most basic skills,” says George Andries, Director of Providence Regional Rehabilitation Center. “It gives our patients a sense of hope that they will be able to adapt to their new circumstances.”
Building the kitchen was made possible by a generous financial gift from Glen E. Guttormsen, whose wife, Mary Lou, was a patient admitted to the Acute Rehabilitation Unit at PMMC after having a stroke. “Mr. Guttormsen’s gift exemplifies the role of philanthropy in assisting non-profit healthcare organizations as they strive to progressively provide patients with the best care,” says Susan Toner, Director of Providence Community Health Foundation. The kitchen will be dedicated in honor and memory of Mary Lou Guttormsen.
Larson’s Warehouse Superstores of Medford donated all the appliances for the kitchen, which includes a refrigerator, stove, microwave and dishwasher. Toner says partnering with local businesses like Larson’s is yet another example of organizations working together to better meet the needs of our community.
