2006 Providence Festival of Trees Sets a New Record

MEDFORD, Ore (12/11/06) -- The 2006 Providence Festival of Trees is the most successful Festival in its 15-year history. A record amount of nearly $575,000 was raised for the expansion of Providence BirthPlace, supporting Women and Children's services at Providence Medford Medical Center (PMMC).

"The overwhelming success of the 2006 Festival of Trees is directly attributed to the remarkable involvement and generosity of this community," says Susan Toner, Executive Director of Providence Community Health Foundation. "Providence is tremendously fortunate to have the support of hundreds of volunteers and participants."

The money raised this year is a gift to parents and their babies. In addition to the funds raised for the capital project, charitable funds were raised to help provide for children in need who are born at Providence BirthPlace. More than $13,685 was raised for the "Welcome Baby Fund" which allows BirthPlace staff to provide a basket filled with items necessary to care for a new child whose parents qualify through Providence Medford Medical Center Charity guidelines.

Additionally, over $3,285 was raised for the "Diaper Fund" which provides diapers for children whose parents are in need of assistance. This diaper program is a partnership between PMMC, Providence Community Health Foundation and Medford Rogue Rotary District 5110.

Each year the trees are judged by dozens of community members. This year the "People's Choice Award," in memory of Zachary Brown, was presented to "Tree of Renewal" designed by Harry and David.

Several of the trees that were sold at auction also were donated to the community, including one to Dunn House, La Clinical del Valle, Magdalene House, Crossroads Alternative High School and two to the VA Domiciliary.
