Benefits of a Mammogram

Share the message. Remind a friend to schedule her digital mammogram at the Leila J. Eisenstein Breast Center at Providence Medford Medical Center. From one friend to another because you care, this helpful email reminds us all that early detection can save lives.

Digital mammograms are one of the most important tools used to diagnose and evaluate breast cancer. The procedure is safe, involves minimal discomfort, and may save your life. According to the American Cancer Society, most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save many thousands of lives each year, and that many more lives could be saved if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests.

Current evidence supporting mammograms is
even stronger than in the past. In particular,

recent evidence has confirmed that mammograms offer substantial benefit for women in their 40s. However, a mammogram is only part of a woman's healthcare program. A careful history and annual physical examination including a manual breast examination should be the foundation of breast cancer care and screening.
