Stereotactic breast biopsy is a test that uses a special computer to accurately target a questionable lesion in the breast. This procedure may prevent the need for a surgical biopsy.
During the procedure, the patient is positioned face down on a table with a hole in the center. The breast is placed through this hole. Compression is required during the procedure, but it is usually not as tight as a mammogram. After locating the lesion on the computer, a small nick is made in the skin and a biopsy device about the size of a pencil is guided to the lesion in the breast.
Using the biopsy device, small samples of the breast tissue are taken and then sent to the laboratory. The procedure will take approximately an hour.
Patients should wear comfortable clothing to their procedure and leave belts, earrings and other jewelry at home.
It is important to stay off all aspirin products for several days before this procedure. People who are on prescription blood thinning medications such as Coumadin need to consult with their physician before scheduling this exam.
