During the last few years, breast ultrasound has become an integral part of women’s breast imaging. Ultrasound provides important complementary diagnostic information to support the mammogram. It helps physicians distinguish between fluid filled cysts and solid lesions and it can evaluate palpable breast lumps and areas of breast tenderness. Ultrasound is used to assess breast masses in women who are under thirty, pregnant or lactating – instances when mammographic imaging would be suboptimal. Ultrasound is a valuable aid to guide the physician in breast biopsies, cyst aspirations and pre-operative wire localization procedures. The Leila J. Eisenstein Breast Center at Providence Medford Medical Center is located on the ground floor of Providence Plaza, adjacent to Providence Medford Medical Center.
