What's New at Providence?

Cancer Services

The first high dose-rate brachytherapy radiation treatment in the area is now available. The new type of radiation is especially suited for gynecologic, breast and prostate tumors. It allows for high radiation doses directly to the tumor while shortening treatment time.

Radiation oncologist Eric Mullen, MD. of Radiation Oncology Consultants, P.C., has joined the Providence Radiation Oncology department. Dr. Mullen moved to Medford after the completion of his residency at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota.

A second linear accelerator for radiation cancer treatment is now operational. It delivers a uniform dose of high-energy x-rays to the patient's tumor. These x-rays can destroy the cancer cells, while sparing the surrounding normal tissue.

The Leila J. Eisenstein Breast Center at Providence Medford Medical Center recently added a second digital mammography machine to meet the demand for growth in this service. It is one of only a few medical centers in the region to have this sophisticated new imaging equipment.

The goal of saving lives with early breast cancer detection is now a reality for The Leila J. Eisenstein Breast Center at Providence Medford Medical Center. According to the American Cancer Society, if breast cancer is caught in the early stages there is a 95% chance of survival. Since the Breast Center's opening in 2003, 198 women were diagnosed in early stages of breast cancer.
