Lymphedema is a particular type of swelling that occurs when part of the body becomes congested with lymph fluid and protein molecules. Normally, this fluid drains via lymph vessels. The swelling can occur with structural malformation, or after damage to the lymph circulatory system. The damage may be accidental or elective, as in cancer surgery or radiation therapy.
Medicare and most private insurance carriers cover lymphedema treatment. Therapy consists of massage, compression, exercise, skin care and education. Monthly classes are held for anyone wanting more information.
