Providence Seaside expands surgical services
A 500-square-foot expansion will increase the number of operating rooms at Providence Seaside Hospital from one to three. The additional operating rooms will greatly improve the efficiency of the department, says Bill Sexton, chief executive of Providence’s North Coast Service Area. Turn around time between surgeries will also improve, as cleaning crews can prepare one operating room while doctors and nurses work in another.
A remodel of the space will include private recovery rooms inside the department to improve privacy for patients recovering from surgery. A separate reception area for outpatients also is planned.
One highlight of the remodel will be a major upgrade in technology: A Picture Archival Computer System, or PACS, will replace film-based radiology and X-ray systems. The new system will make it possible to conduct simultaneous consults with physicians in Portland and around the world.
The expansion has been a priority for some time now, as the need for surgical services has increased. “Most people don’t want to leave our community for these services,” says Sexton. “They want to receive their care right here.”
Expanding outward presented challenges, since the hospital is surrounded by wetlands and residential areas. So the hospital made room by moving some services off-site. The expansion will occupy the space that was previously used for the Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and Home Health departments. Those services have been moved to a business park on Hwy. 101 in Gearhart.
A remodeling and expansion plan will double the size of the hospital’s Surgery department.
