James K. Smith, M.D.

 
Rheumatology

Dr. Smith received a BA in chemistry from Emory University in 1981 and his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 1985. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Metropolitan Hospital in New York, New York. He became interested in the study of immunology and autoimmune diseases, while serving as chief medical resident at Metropolitan. He went on to complete his fellowship in the study of immunology and rheumatology at New York University School of Medicine.

Since 1991 he has practiced rheumatology, starting in Chicago then moving to Oregon in 1998, joining Northwest Rheumatology Associates. Special interests include applying advances in immunology by treating autoimmune diseases with the newer biologic therapies and advocating a lifestyle that includes a healthy diet, vigorous exercise, and adequate time for family, hobbies, and rest. He enjoys getting to know his patients’ jobs and interests. Dr. Smith’s activities include tennis, skiing and chess, typically with his daughter, Chloe. He serves as treasurer for the Oregon Scholastic Chess Federation.
