Providence Peripheral Nerve Services provides patients access to expert clinical evaluations and treatments of neuromuscular diseases. This is carried out by a select group of dedicated physicians specialty-trained in the care of neuromuscular diseases.

Our specialists also conduct electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) – tests usually performed to diagnose peripheral nerves, muscles or neuromuscular junctions. We also perform Quantitative Sudomotor Axon Reflex Testing (QSART), a test used for evaluating autonomic nerve function, and epidermal (skin) biopsies for the diagnosis of disorders collectively termed small fiber neuropathy.

We have a strong referral base in collaboration with other specialty providers who frequently participate in the evaluation and care of our patients, including hand surgeons, spine surgeons, rheumatologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists and podiatrists.

Additional services include:

  • Occupational therapy and physical therapy
  • Surgery for entrapment neuropathies
  • Medication for neuropathic pain

What are peripheral nerve disorders?

Peripheral nerve disorders, also referred to as peripheral neuropathies, are disorders of nerves located outside of your brain and spinal cord. These disorders are numerous, either damaging the nerves or interrupting nerve impulses traveling through your arms or legs from the brain and spinal cord to your skin and muscles.

Many disease processes can precipitate peripheral nerve dysfunction, including diabetes, viral infections, immunological disorders, nerve compressions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and injury or trauma. Peripheral nerve and muscles diseases can also be inherited – something you’re born with. Symptoms often start gradually and can worsen, including numbness, pain, burning, tingling, muscle weakness or sensitivity to touch. Our specialty physicians are experts in the evaluation and care of these problems.

A new venture poised to bring relief

Providence Peripheral Nerve Services is a new joint venture between Providence Brain Institute, The Oregon Clinic at Providence Portland Medical Center and Dr. David Wilkinson's Neuromuscular Neurology Clinic at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. Providence Peripheral Nerve Services is focused on providing diagnosis, treatment and relief to those who suffer from peripheral nerve disorders.

The Oregon Clinic applies for new accreditation
The Oregon Clinic is in the process of gaining Electrodiagnostic Laboratory Accreditation by the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM). The association serves physicians who diagnose and treat patients with muscle and nerve disorders, extends the knowledge of electrodiagnostic medicine and helps improve the quality of patient care.
