Parents want the very best for their children, so it's natural for them to be concerned if a child misses a developmental milestone. Often there is nothing to worry about; a child may simply need a little extra time or attention to “catch up” with peers. Sometimes, however, children do require more assistance, or an illness or injury may create a need for rehabilitation and specialized care. In such circumstances, your child’s physician may refer your child to Providence Neurodevelopmental Center for Children for evaluation and treatment.
At Providence Neurodevelopmental Center for Children, we have three of the Northwest's top developmental pediatricians on staff. Together with our other experienced clinicians, these physicians design personalized treatment programs, involving family members and caregivers, so each child may reach his or her highest level of functioning.
Developmental pediatrics
PNCC physicians evaluate and treat children with a wide range of developmental conditions, including the medically fragile. Our patients may have a specific area of concern or more complex diagnostic and treatment needs. Working with a child's primary healthcare provider, our developmental pediatricians provide comprehensive consultative care and coordination of services for developmental concerns.
Physical therapy
PNCC physical therapists customize home programs for the unique needs of each child – and then work with every family to guide them through the program’s use. Using a variety of approaches (including neurodevelopmental treatment and aquatic, sensorimotor and feeding therapies), we apply our specialized clinical skills to:
-
promote optimal motor development
-
treat orthopedic concerns, such as torticollis
-
evaluate for special equipment and orthotic needs
-
facilitate maximal independence and function.
Occupational therapy
PNCC occupational therapists help your child achieve his or her full potential in functional tasks of daily life. We specialize in motor skill development, sensory integration, visual motor integration/perception, and attention and behavioral organization. These abilities support independence in everyday activities such as play, self-care, handwriting and feeding.
Speech-language pathology
Our speech-language pathology help your child with speech, language, and cognitive communication. We also offer specialized services for children with feeding and swallowing needs.
Audiology
Our audiologists are specially trained to identify hearing problems in children at all developmental levels. We diagnose and measure deficits through a variety of tests:
- Behavioral
- Otoacoustic emission
- Tympanometry/acoustic reflex
- Central auditory processing
- Auditory brainstem response (ABR), with or without sedation
Nutrition
Children with disabilities and medically fragile children often have health problems associated with their diagnoses. Our pediatric dietitians can help manage these problems through nutrition and weight management and maximize a child's potential for growth and development.
