Providence Cancer Center Oncology and Hematology Care Eastside

 

Providence Cancer Center is pleased to announce the addition of several medical oncologists and staff who were previously with The Oregon Clinic.  Effective November 1, 2008, this group became the Providence Cancer Center Oncology and Hematology Care Eastside Team.

 

Walter J. Urba, M.D., Ph.D.Walter J Urba, M.D., Ph.D.

Board-certified in oncology and internal medicine, Dr. Walter Urba earned his doctorate from the UCLA School of Medicine, and received his medical degree from the University of Miami.  He was a post-doctoral Fellow with the Laboratory of Professor William H. Hildemann.  Dr. Urba's residency was completed at Morristown Memorial Hospital, Affiliate – Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons.  He was also a Clinical Staff Fellow in Medical Oncology at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health.

As the Director of Cancer Research for the Robert W. Franz Cancer Research Center in the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute at Providence Cancer Center, Dr. Urba credits his mom, a 27-year breast cancer survivor, as the reason he went into cancer research.  So when Providence set out to build the cancer center on the campus of Providence Portland Medical Center, Dr. Urba became involved in planning every detail.

“I knew it had to pass the mom test,” he says. “Would I want my mom to be cared for here? Would she have access to the newest treatment discoveries? Would she be treated with kindness and respect through every step of her care? The Providence Cancer Center passes the test. My mom finds that comforting. And so do I.”

Dr. Urba's strong commitment to research is evidenced in his activities.  He's an Affiliate Investigator in the Division of Clinical Research at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.  He serves on several committees, including the Melanoma, Immunomolecular & Genitourinary Committees with Southwest Oncology Group, and the Cellular, Tissue and Gene Therapies Advisory Committee with the FDA.  Dr. Urba is also on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Immunotherapy.


Craig Nichols, M.D.Craig Nichols, M.D.

“With appropriate and aggressive therapy, we can cure in excess of 90 percent of patients with Hodgkin’s disease, a large majority of lymphoma patients and virtually all men with testicular cancer. The goal now is to reach that level of success in our treatment of other cancers and to minimize the long-term side effects of cancer treatment for all patients.”

Dr. Craig Nichols is a world-renowned physician and researcher with special experience and expertise in treating patients with Hodgkin’s disease, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and testicular cancer.

In his role as director of clinical program development at Providence Cancer Center, Dr. Nichols assembles multidisciplinary teams of researchers, physicians, nurses and support people to improve outcomes and the standard of care for other cancers as well. Highly specialized clinical expertise, groundbreaking research, and patient outreach and education are the hallmarks of these programs.

Dr. Nichols received his medical degree from Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, Oregon.  He completed his internship and residency at the Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation, and he is board-certified in medical oncology.  He was a Fellow in Hematology with the University of Miami, and a Fellow in Hematology/Oncology at Indiana University.

Before joining Providence Cancer Center in 2007, Dr. Nichols served at Oregon Health & Science University as professor of medicine, the DeArmond Chair of Clinical Cancer Research, head of the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology, and associate director of the Cancer Institute. He previously served at Indiana University, obtaining the rank of professor of medicine.

His current activities include serving on the Board of Directors for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, and being a Trustee with Oregon Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.


Eric Bernstein, M.D.Eric Bernstein, M.D.

Dr. Eric Bernstein holds a Master's in Public Health from the University of North Carolina, where he also earned his medical degree.  Following his internal medicine residency at Providence Portland Medical Center, he was a Fellow in Hematology/Oncology at Indiana University.  Dr. Bernstein is board-certified in medical oncology and internal medicine.

His activities include memberships in the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology.

Alison Conlin, M.D. received her undergraduate degree in biology from Cornell University. She went on to receive her medical degree at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, N.Y. Dr. Conlin completed her internship and residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York, N.Y. She then completed her medical oncology/hematology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, N.Y. Dr. Conlin’s research interests are in both early and advanced stage breast cancer and the development and incorporation of new drugs for these patients.


Todd Crocenzi, M.D.Todd Crocenzi, M.D.

After earning his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College, Dr. Todd Crocenzi completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD.  At the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH, he was a Fellow in Hematology/Oncology and a Research Fellow in Immunology.  He is board-certified in medical oncology and internal medicine.

Dr. Crocenzi is the Director of Gastrointestinal Oncology Research at the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute, Providence Portland Medical Center.  He's also a Principal Investigator with the Columbia River Oncology Program.


Brendan Curti, M.D.Brendan Curti, M.D.

Dr. Brendan Curti earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine.  His internship and residency in internal medicine were completed at Hershey Medical Center, followed by an Oncology Fellowship at Georgetown University Hospital.  Dr. Curti is board-certified in medical oncology and internal medicine.

“Over the last 20 years, there have been many advances in cancer research.  It has been a privilege for me to participate in some of this work and a pleasure to know many courageous patients who contributed to the research by volunteering to receive new medicines to fight their cancer.”

Dr. Curti holds two positions within the Providence Cancer Center.  He's the Director of Genitourinary Oncology Research, Earle A. Chiles Research Institute, and also the Director of the Biotherapy Clinical Program, Robert W. Franz Cancer Research Center.  Before joining the Providence Cancer Center, Dr. Curti served as a Senior Investigator in the Biological Response Modifiers Program, Division of Cancer Treatment, at the National Cancer Institute.


Robert Lufkin, D.O.Robert Lufkin, M.D.

Dr. Robert Lufkin received his doctorate in osteopathic medicine from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, ME.  He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Providence Portland Medical Center.  Dr. Lufkin was a Fellow in Medical Oncology/Hematology at Baystate Medical Center/Tufts University School of Medicine, Springfield, MA.  He has also been an internist with the VA Medical Center and also with The Oregon Clinic in Medical Oncology.  Dr. Lufkin is board-certified in medical oncology and internal medicine.

His activities include memberships in the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology.


Christie Moore, M.D.

After receiving an undergraduate degree in biology at Barnard College, Dr. Moore earned her medical degree from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. She then completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in NYC, followed by fellowship training in hematology and medical oncology at Oregon Health and Science University. Dr. Moore’s areas of clinical focus include the treatment of germ cell tumors, lymphoma, and all aspects of care related to adolescent and young adult oncology.


Rachel Sanborn, M.D.

After graduating from Oregon Health & Science University with her medical degree, Dr. Rachel Sanborn completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago.  Then she returned to Portland for her Fellowship in Hematology and Medical Oncology at Oregon Health & Science University.  She is board-certified in medical oncology and internal medicine. 

Dr. Sanborn is the Co-Director of the Thoracic Oncology Program, Robert W. Franz Cancer Research Center, Earle A. Chiles Research Institute at Providence Cancer Center.  She is also an Institutional Review Board Member for Providence Portland Medical Center.  Dr. Sanborn is a member of several groups, including the American College of Surgeons Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Hematology, International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, and the National Lung Cancer Partnership.
