Providence Cancer Center to Host Exhibit on Preventable, Treatable and Beatable Cancer

WHEN: Tuesday, April 14, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

WHAT: Providence Cancer Center will host the Prevent Cancer Super Colon™, an interactive display to raise awareness that colorectal cancer is preventable, treatable and beatable.

WHERE: Providence Portland Medical Center
Conference room A
4805 N.E. Glisan St., Portland
Free parking

DETAILS: The Prevent Cancer Super Colon™ is an inflatable, 20-foot long, 8-foot high replica of a human colon. As visitors walk through the free exhibit, they get an up-close look at:

  • Healthy colon tissue
  • Tissue with non-malignant colorectal disease, such as Crohn’s and colitis
  • Colorectal polyps
  • Various stages of colorectal cancer

During this event, Providence physicians, researchers, oncology nurses and cancer survivors will be available throughout the day to answer questions about colorectal cancer, the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States.

Colon cancer presents no outward warnings until it is very advanced. Inside, however, the early warning signs can be seen clearly, even before cancer develops. Regular screenings provide a clear picture of these warning signs, giving people the power to prevent colon cancer or to find it in its earliest, most treatable stages. According to the American Cancer Society, if everyone were tested, tens of thousands of lives could be saved each year.

The exhibit educates visitors about the importance of screening, explains risk factors and symptoms, outlines prevention tips, and lists several treatment options for colorectal cancer.

Since 2003, the Prevent Cancer Foundation has crisscrossed the country with its Super ColonTM exhibit as part of a campaign that seeks to educate Americans about colorectal cancer.
