Providence Experts Offer Advice for Epilepsy Patients

PORTLAND, Ore. — Providence honors Epilepsy Awareness Month with two free community forums: Women and Epilepsy and Surgical Treatment of Epilepsy:

Women and Epilepsy looks at the unique needs women have once they are diagnosed with epilepsy. Providence experts will address the effect hormones have on seizures through the spectrum of a woman’s life cycle - from puberty to menopause. Experts will also discuss concerns for women considering pregnancy and the risk of fetal birth defects due to seizures and antiepileptic medications.

Surgical Treatment of Epilepsy is an option for patients who don’t respond to drug therapy. This talk will focus on the different types of epilepsy surgeries. Providence experts will discuss the process for determining if patients are a candidate for epilepsy surgery and possible outcomes of surgery.
