WHAT: The oil paintings of Molalla artist Noel Nevarez brings bold, bright color to the Providence Milwaukie Community Gallery.
WHEN: On display through July 9.
WHERE: Providence Milwaukie Community Gallery Providence Milwaukie Hospital 10150 SE 32nd Avenue, 2nd Floor Milwaukie DETAILS: Providence Milwaukie Community Gallery welcomes an exhibit of oil paintings by Noel Nevarez. Hailing from a creative family of first-generation Mexican Americans, art has always been part of Nevarez’s life. There is a strong line of amateur artists in his family: cousins who also paint in oils, a sculptress sister, an aunt with an obsession to paint, and a brother whose paintings and drawings have always inspired Noel.
His favorite artist is Vincent Van Gogh whose bold brushstrokes and use of strong outlines continue to influence Nevarez. Most of the paintings on display were inspired by a trip to New York, where he saw Van Gogh’s “The Starry Night,” and the landscapes of the western United States, especially from Colorado and southern Utah.
The majority of Nevarez’s work is linseed oil, or oil pastel on cotton board, which is displayed behind glass. Wax is the binder for the pastel that will never dry and in turn will never crack or oxidize, as can oil paintings with time. Nevarez has exhibited his work at Nike Headquarters for the Latino Friends Network in 2005, at Washington Mutual in Beaverton, and at the Canby Library.
While these originals are not for sale, limited edition giclee reproductions are available directly from the artist. Contact noel.nevarez@yahoo.com for more information.
Providence Milwaukie Community Gallery was created to demonstrate Providence’s commitment to diversity. At its simplest, diversity refers to the ways in which we are all different from each other. “Human or biological diversity” encompasses all the differences we are born with or can’t change, such as our ancestry, race, physical ability, body type, color, sexual orientation, gender and age. “Cultural diversity” refers to the differences in what we’ve learned and the choices we’ve made in life, such as the languages we speak, our religious or political beliefs, our family or cultural traditions, our level of education or income, and our marital status. The Providence Milwaukie Community Gallery changes quarterly to showcase the diversity in our community through the works of Clackamas County artists. All proceeds from sales go directly to the exhibiting artist. The gallery is curated by the Arts Action Alliance of Clackamas County.
