Portland, Ore, — Craig Nichols, M.D., an internationally known medical oncologist, has joined the team of leading physicians and researchers at Providence Cancer Center. Dr. Nichols will focus his efforts on leading-edge patient care and clinical program development in testicular cancer, Hodgkin’s disease and lymphoma. He will work in collaboration with The Oregon Clinic, which will move into the new cancer center building on the Providence Portland Medical Center campus in early 2008.
“Dr. Nichols’ previous experience in building successful clinical programs and attracting outstanding young physicians, as well as his expertise in treating patients with testicular cancer, Hodgkin’s disease, lymphoma and his work on cancer clinical trials will be a tremendous benefit for Providence Cancer Center patients,” said Walter Urba, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Robert W. Franz Cancer Research Center and physician director of research, Providence Health & Services – Oregon Region.

In 1998, Dr. Nichols was named to head of the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Oregon Health & Science University Cancer Institute. He was also associate director of the institute’s Cancer Clinical Research program and professor of medicine, hematology and medical oncology. Dr. Nichols received his medical degree from OHSU in 1978. After completing his residency in New Orleans, he received further training in hematology and oncology at Indiana University.
Nichols successfully treated seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong for testicular cancer in 1996, and serves on the board of directors for the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
Dr. Nichols also serves on the Oregon Chapter of the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.
