MILWAUKIE, Ore. — William Gillanders, M.D., director of the Providence Milwaukie Family Medicine Residency Program, was chosen for the 2007 Nikitas J. Zervanos Outstanding Program Director award. The award was presented at a recent meeting of the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors/American Academy of Family Physicians in Kansas City.
Named after one of the first family medicine leaders, the. Zervanos award recognizes a lifetime of achievement in family medicine. Recipients of this award demonstrate leadership, advancement of the specialty, service as a mentor to residents and medical students, and service to the community.
As only its seventh recipient, Dr. Gillanders says he was surprised and humbled by this award, perhaps the most prestigious of the residency program awards. In addition to his work as Residency Program director and faculty, he maintains a clinical practice with Providence Family Medicine – Milwaukie, and is the medical director at Willamette View retirement community.
“The residents and faculty are very proud to have him as our director,” says Jennifer Herber, M.D., chief resident. She adds, “Dr. Gillanders is an inspiration for all new physicians, and is obviously respected by his peers within and beyond our program.”
