William “Bill” Sherer, a health care executive with 22 years of experience, is the new assistant administrator for medicine for Providence Health & Services’s Portland service area. Lisa Vance, administrator of Providence Portland Medical Center, made the announcement today. Sherer replaces Dan Stevens, who is now the director of network development for Providence Health Plans.
“Bill’s extensive experience in health care management, including many years as a senior executive in long-term care, have proven invaluable and will continue to serve us in his new role,” said Vance. “His expertise will play a major role in ensuring our success as we focus on affordability, excellence and growth while carrying out our Mission to serve the community.”
Sherer joined Providence Portland two years ago as administrative project manager. In that role, he has overseen several critical initiatives, including the implementation of the ProvExpert computerized physician order entry program and the coordination of internal efforts to increase productivity and manage expenses.
“I am honored to be part of the Providence administrative team,” said Sherer. “Providence has a tremendous history of providing quality service and an even more promising future. I look forward to being part of it.”
As assistant administrator for medicine, Sherer will be responsible for new business development within medical subspecialties, including gastroenterology, pulmonology, critical care medicine and nephrology. He also will assume the new responsibility of interfacing with primary care physicians in the community.
Sherer has a master’s in health services administration from Illinois’ College of St. Francis and is a board certified fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
