Firmine Jean-Baptiste, M.D.
Board Certified: Obstetrics and Gynecology
Dr. Jean-Baptiste emphasizes “open discussion and an approach to the total well-being of the woman” in her practice, adding, “I touch on the social and psychological factors that can contribute to a woman’s state of health.” As a doctor she most enjoys “direct patient contact and intervening in the patient’s life in such a way that I make a difference not only physically but mentally as well.”
For her, the role of physician has many parts: to approach patients with compassion and empathy, inform them clearly of their options, and make diagnosis and treatment decisions using the current and updated standard of practice.
Dr. Jean-Baptiste earned her medical degree from SUNY Health Science Center and completed her internship and residency at Baylor College of Medicine.
Born in Haiti, Dr. Jean-Baptiste speaks French and English. As a Medical Corps volunteer she annually provides gynecological care to patients in Guatemala.
Angela Keating, M.D.
Board Certified: Obstetrics and Gynecology
Dr. Keating believes it is vital that her patients understand all available treatment options and feel comfortable enough to ask her questions so that, together, they can come up with a care plan that is optimal. “It’s important to me that all options are understood and can be discussed in a trusting and respectful environment,” she says. “That way, I can help my patient choose a course of care that is best for her.”
Board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Keating earned her medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis. She completed her residency at the University of Cincinnati, and served on the clinical faculty at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa.
Married with three children, Dr. Keating enjoys travel and recreational activities, such as running, hiking and kayaking. She also speaks Spanish and French.
Michael Klotz, M.D.
Board Certified: Obstetrics and Gynecology
Dr. Klotz believes his most important role as a physician is to be someone his patients can trust. “I want my patient to know that she is receiving the same quality of care that I would want for my family and friends,” he says. “I always want to give my patients my full attention, regardless of my schedule.”
As a physician, Dr. Klotz reviews all options of care, even those that he cannot provide, saying, “If I cannot solve a problem, I will do my best to find someone who can.”
Board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Klotz earned his medical degree at the University of Washington in Seattle. He completed his internship and residency at The State University of New York at Stony Brook in Stony Brook, N.Y.
Dr. Klotz loves Portland and feels it is the perfect place to raise his son.
Susan Mitchell-Miller, N.P.
Board Certified: Family Medicine
Susan Mitchell-Miller is part of a health care team that includes physicians and nurse practitioners – a team she believes is a winning combination for patients.
“Patients receive the best standard of care with our team approach,” she says. Susan provides preventive health care to women with a focus on education, health promotion and disease prevention. “As a woman, I am an understanding advocate and a knowledgeable health care resource for other women,” she says. “I try to make each woman’s visit comfortable and informative.”
A psychology and nursing major at Seattle University, Susan went on to complete her master’s degree in nursing at the University of Rochester. She became a certified family nurse practitioner in 1979.
Susan is a native Oregonian and an avid runner. She enjoys family time with her husband and two children.
Susan D. Payne, M.D.
Board Certified: Obstetrics and Gynecology
Dr. Payne believes that establishing a caring and trusting relationship with her patients is her most important role as a primary care provider. “It’s not enough to deliver quality care in and of itself,” she says. “By taking the time to listen and educate my patients, they understand that I care about them receiving the best possible medical advice and attention.”
Board certified in OB/GYN, Dr. Payne earned her medical degree at the University of California, Irvine College of Medicine. She completed her residency at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center and for five years was a member of the clinical faculty at Stanford University’s School of Medicine in Palo Alto, Calif.
Outside of the office, Dr. Payne enjoys time with her husband, a real estate investment advisor, and their two daughters. She also enjoys long-distance cycling, running and alpine skiing, or curling up with a good novel.

Jeffrey Penikas, M.D.
Board Certified: Obstetrics and Gynecology
To Dr. Jeffrey Penikas, his most important role as a physician is to keep patients well informed and guide them through what for many is unfamiliar territory.
In his practice, he emphasizes preventive care. “It is very important to me to keep the patient an active participant in his or her care,” he says.
Dr. Penikas received his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in New York. He also completed his internship and residency at the University of Rochester.
Dr. Penikas was born in Albuquerque, N.M. In his free time, he enjoys cooking, running and participating in an occasional marathon.
Elizabeth Reindl, M.D.
Board Certified: Obstetrics and Gynecology
Dr. Reindl emphasizes patient education and preventive medicine in her practice, in addition to high-quality medical care. “I think it’s important for patients to participate in maintaining their own health, and I’m here to facilitate that practice,” she says.
“My patients are my first priority,” she adds. “I enjoy developing relationships with them and caring for them throughout their lives.”
A Seattle native, Dr. Reindl is a graduate of the University of Washington. She earned her medical degree at the St. Louis University School of Medicine, and completed her obstetrics and gynecology residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
To maintain her own health, Dr. Reindl enjoys running, mountain biking, skiing and hiking. She worked in Germany briefly, and speaks the language well.
Shanta Schriever, N.P.
Board Certified: Family Practice
“As a women’s health care provider, my most important role is to be a source of knowledge and support for women as they make decisions regarding their personal health care,” says Shanta. “My goal is to be a partner in the creation of a healthy lifestyle.”
A Nebraska native, Shanta earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing at the University of Nebraska College of Nursing, and completed her master’s degree in nursing at the university’s medical center. She received her certification as a women’s health care nurse practitioner in 1998. In working with women, she says, “I am open to women’s thoughts and beliefs surrounding their bodies, and I try to create an open and comfortable environment with every visit.”
In her free time, Shanta enjoys taking in Oregon’s beautiful surroundings while hiking, biking and skiing, or just sitting outside, “when the sun decides to shine.”
Mitchell Strauss, M.D.
Board Certified: Obstetrics and Gynecology
"From the time I delivered that very first baby," says Dr. Strauss, "I knew I had found the specialty for me."
Dr. Strauss attended the University of California at Santa Barbara. He received his medical education at St. Louis University School of Medicine in Missouri, and completed his residency at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Conn. He has extensive training in laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery.
Dr. Strauss is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
In his free time, Dr. Strauss enjoys outdoor activities, including sailing, tennis and hiking.
S. Brooke Taylor, WHCNP
Board Certified: Family Medicine
"My work as a nurse practitioner allows me to help others and gives me the opportunity to make a difference during my daily life,” says Brooke Taylor, WHCNP (women’s health care nurse practitioner).
In her practice, Brooke emphasizes open communication and patient education. “I believe in educating patients and empowering them to become actively involved in their health care,” she says.
Brooke received her undergraduate degree from Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz. and earned her master of science in nursing degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.
In her free time, she enjoys golf, reading, traveling, and spending time with her two children.
Lisa Thum, M.D.
Board Certified: Obstetrics and Gynecology
Dr. Thum believes in providing high-quality, supportive health care and educating her patients about their bodies and disease prevention. She enjoys focusing on women’s health and encourages her patients to participate actively in decisions regarding their health care. “Some of the most rewarding aspects of my work include the cultivation of lifelong partnerships with my patients and the honor of sharing some of life’s most meaningful experiences with them,” she says.
Dr. Thum earned her medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. She completed both her internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology there, as well.
Traveling, hiking, bird watching, fishing and gardening are just a few of the outdoor activities Dr. Thum enjoys with her husband in their spare time.
