Dr. Berberian graduated with a B.S. in Biology from William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey. Chris enjoys hiking and the outdoors, watching and playing sports, especially football, softball, golf, and tennis. His father is a physician has been a great inspiration in Chris’s life. Chris has always been interested in the Pacific Northwest and is excited for the opportunity to live in Oregon.

Des Moines University Medical Center

Rebecca comes to us from Des Moines University Medical Center, after finishing her undergraduate degree at University of Oregon.  She is a golf enthusiast and has an active interest in track and field and has served as an athletic trainer and NCAA track official.  She is excited about returning to the Pacific NW and continuing to develop her primary care skills.

Lien came to us as a 5th Pathway Resident from New York Medical College in Valhalla after completing medical school at Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Mexico.  She completed her R1 year in McAllen, Texas.  Lien is an avid runner and tennis player.  She speaks Spanish and Vietnamese and is very active with Amesty International and the Women for Women Organization (for support of education and financial stability in third world countries).

Dartmouth Medical School

Geri completed her undergraduate degree at UC Santa Cruz and medical school at Dartmouth. She has always had an active community involvement and strong commitment to Family Medicine. She has a particular interest in patient education and patient empowerment, with a particular focus on the Latino community.  Geri did an externship with us and we are very pleased that she will be rejoining our team.


Benjamin Wachsmuth, M.D. Benjamin Wachsmuth, M.D.   
University of Missouri-Columbia

Ben grew up in the mid-west and his undergraduate degree is from Washington University in St. Louis.  He completed his M.D. at University of Missouri in Columbia.  He has strong academic credentials and has been an active member of the Family Medicine Interest Group in Missouri. Ben has considerable experience with urban underserved and disadvantaged communities and wants to pursue that interest during his residency. His spouse is pursing her Master's degree in Health Administration, and they hope to work together to improve care for urban inner city populations.

Dr. Wyllie transferred to our program from the University of Washington Family Medicine Residency Program.  He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Texas at Houston.  He does speak some Spanish and French.  He has done portrait and figure drawing for ten years, composes music for the piano, and enjoys sailing and windsurfing.

 

Third Year

Dr. Backman is married with two young children. She is an avid painter and enjoys doing everything from full room murals to faux painting. She foresees herself practicing in an underserved, probably rural environment and is a family physician at heart.  “No specialty, regardless of how glamorous and lucrative it is would have the same appeal for me.”


Matthew James Breeze, M.D.Matthew Breeze, M.D.
Medical School: Oregon Health and Science University

Dr. Breeze is married with a young daughter. He is fluent in Spanish and German and continually seeks opportunities to care for the underserved. Dr. Breeze co-founded the OHSU Association of Students for the Underserved at the end of his first year of medical school. He is a board member and currently the Secretary of the Association of Clinicians for the Underserved. “The continuity and comprehensiveness of Family Practice provides relief of suffering in a manner unique to the specialty, allowing me the greatest chance to provide patients with complete health care.”


Marc Brandon Magenis Carey, M.D., Ph.D.Marc Carey, M.D.
Oregon Health and Science University

Dr. Carey is married with two children. He has spent the last 20 years in higher education, has strong interest in academics and research, and has been a leader among his peers.  Since May 2001, Dr. Carey has served on the Oregon Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) Board of Directors.  He is an active member in numerous organizations and served as student delegate to the National Congress of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Carey realized he wanted to be a family practice physician in his second week of medical school. “I realized there was more to medicine than science and that I was as interested in hearing my patients’ stories – learning who they were – as I was in helping them with their medical problems.”


Shahram “Shay” Hosseinion, M.D.Shay Hosseinion, M.D.
Oregon Health and Science University

Dr. Hosseinion is an outdoor enthusiast and whitewater-rafting guide. He also enjoys hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, windsurfing, and skiing. In addition, Dr. Hosseinion is a musician and plays the piano, guitar, tar, djembe drum, and didgeridoo. He is fluent in Spanish, Persian, French and Czech. Dr. Hosseinion was introduced to the roles of a family physician and the scope and philosophy of family practice one week before classes started in medical school.  “Everything from the holistic perspective to the emphasis upon close relationships with families to the broad spectrum of practice had a voice inside me the whole time saying, Yes, that’s me!  That’s what I want to do!”
 

Mark Joseph Hubbard, M.D.Mark Hubbard, M.D.
New York Medical College, Valhalla, New York, Fifth Pathway 

Dr. Hubbard enjoys all sports and most outdoor activities. He is also a musician with guitar being his instrument of choice and has been in several bands. He has played everything from the trombone to the piano. Dr. Hubbard’s journey toward becoming a physician began with his father who was also a physician. “It was that dedication and calm and assuring manner that let me know that everything would be alright. I’ve never known anyone that I respect of admire more than my father.”


Yamuna Kasaraneni, M.D.Yamuna Kasaraneni, M.D.
Andhra Medical College, India

Dr. Kasaraneni’s fascination for the medical profession started early. Her father was a radiologist and she was surrounded with physicians from all specialties both within the family and family friends. She married into a family of eleven doctors with her being the twelfth.  She graduated with certificates of merit in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Social and Preventive Medicine, and in Forensic Medicine. “My strength in primary care lies in my ability to incorporate the psychosocial, educational and medical needs of each patient into a managed care plan. My career vision now is to improve the clinical outcome of patients through innovative patient care and clinical research.”


Lynn Madsen, M.D.Lynn Madsen, M.D.     
University of  Vermont College of Medicine

Lynn graduated from the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington. She completed her first year of Family Practice residency at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Madsen holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Minnesota and has been in private practice as a licensed Psychologist.  She has also worked as a doula and has written extensively about childbirth experience. She speaks fluent French and Russian, has a red belt in Taekwondo, and is the mother of three. We look forward to the perspective Dr. Madsen brings to the program.
