Providence Milwaukie Hospital FPRP requires that first-year residents obtain a "limited license." This permits practice in a teaching setting only, and fees are paid by Providence for all incoming R1 residents.
The State of Oregon Board of Medical Examiners requires that all residents beyond the first postgraduate school year and prior to start of their second year hold a limited or unlimited license in order to practice medicine. Residents are required to obtain unlimited licensure, if eligible under State law, in order to advance to the third year of residency training. These fees are the responsibility of the resident. Full unlimited licensure is required for all work outside the teaching environment and for individual DEA certification.
Providence Milwaukie Hospital FPRP requires all first-year residents to take the USMLE III. Passing the USMLE Step III, in addition to one year of postgraduate medical training, is required by the State of Oregon Board of Medical Examiners for full unlimited license application. The American Board of Family Practice requires an unlimited license to sit for the board exam.
