The Earle A. Chiles Research Institute (EACRI) is a unique part of the fabric of Providence. Founded in 1988, EACRI is dedicated to bench to bedside investigation in the fields of cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases and oncology. The EACRI occupies the top floor of a major patient care tower of PPMC.
Oncology research is a major activity. As summarized in the following table, as of 6/1/05, the Franz Cancer Research Center, within the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute has active research awards totaling nearly $10,000,000. As the project name indicates, the research is primarily laboratory-based.
However, Providence investigators are also very active in a large number of
pharmaceutical company-sponsored clinical trials.
The Infectious Diseases laboratory focuses on molecular diagnostic and evaluation of antimicrobials. The laboratory has 10 full-time employees with active participation of five MD consultants in Infectious Diseases.
At present, there are 19 active clinical trials in cardiovascular disease with a support staff of five and 10 clinical investigators.
