Providence Portland: Our Medical Center

About Providence Portland Medical Center
Research at PPMC CORE

Providence Portland Medical Center is a state-of-the art facility handling more than 50,000 emergency visits and 23,000 admissions every year. Providence Portland is one of the largest hospitals in Oregon, with 483 licensed beds, more than 1,000 medical staff members, and 3,700 employees.

Providence Portland is growing to serve the demand for excellence in medical care and research. A 12-story building is under construction on campus that will house a comprehensive cancer center – including unique immunotherapy research facilities, an integrative medicine program and medical spa – a surgical services suite and 94 new patient rooms. The new Providence Cancer Center will open its doors in 2008.

In addition, Providence Portland serves as a tertiary care referral center for Oregon and surrounding states. The facility’s specialty units currently include a 27-bed diabetes/renal unit, a 19-bed oncology unit, a 33-bed cardiac unit, and a 54-bed psychiatric unit.

The Providence Heart and Vascular Institute’s Heart Clinic/Transplant Program centers on multidisciplinary treatment of end-stage heart disease. The community-based program includes outpatient consultations, assist devices, heart transplantation, and national clinical trials of new medicines and procedures. Providence Portland also serves as a regional referral base for acute cardiac intervention.

Providence Portland opened one of the first Gamma Knife Centers in the West. The Center offers noninvasive treatment for patients with brain tumors and various neurological disorders. The precision of the Gamma Knife affects abnormal tissue only, sparing healthy brain tissue.

The medical facility offers the only hospital-based hyperbaric unit in Oregon. Pressurized oxygen chambers are used to counter the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning, smoke inhalation, infections, poor circulation, side effects from radiation treatment and scuba diving related problems.

A new Providence ALS Center, part of the Providence Brain Institute, opened in 2005. It is dedicated to treating people affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. Emphasis is on treatment, coordinated care, education and early intervention to manage symptoms.

The Providence Portland Medical Center campus is also home to Providence Child Center, which offers a range of services including the only skilled pediatric residential nursing facility in the Pacific Northwest. The Center also offers therapeutic and neuro-developmental programs for children with special needs.

“The health system invests in cutting-edge technology and urges residents to provide input. Currently residents are piloting the tablet PC for accessing patient records at the bedside. I am working directly with Dr. Dick Gibson, IS Medical Director, on ProvExpert to create order sets for PPMC.”
Michael Jernigan, M.D.
