Providence St. Vincent Medical Center: Student Rotations
We take a great deal of pride in our commitment to teaching and students from Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) consistently rate their clinical experience at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center (PSVMC) as one of their best. We welcome students from other medical schools who are interested in considering PSVMC for residency to spend an elective block on one of our ward or ICU teams.
PSVMC is a teaching affiliate of OHSU. Third-year students come regularly from OHSU for four-week rotations on the medicine wards. Vacancies in the clerkship schedule are offered as an elective to third- and fourth-year students from around the United States. These clerkships last four to six weeks. Many students rotating here from other schools have returned for their residency, a further testament to the quality of their experience with us.
Visiting students are assigned to ward teams consisting of an intern, a resident, and a teaching attending. In the ICU, the student is integrated into the care team organization of the unit. Visiting students participate in all student and team activities and teaching conferences at PSVMC: doing H&Ps, writing progress notes, and developing plans for diagnosis and therapy. Students attend morning report and noon conferences each weekday, make attending and teaching rounds, and participate in two, 1-hour teaching sessions per week with a faculty member.
Students are not required to take overnight call; however, they may come in on weekends when their team is on call. Call is every fourth night on the medicine wards and every third night on the ICU.
Evaluations are made at the end of the rotation by the attending physician, resident and intern.
Clerkships are unpaid positions; on-site housing is available (call rooms).
