The residency program at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center is committed to fostering an environment of inquiry and scholarship among its residents. The medical center, with its many specialty centers, is actively engaged in ongoing clinical and outcomes research, and residents are encouraged to become involved.
PSVMC is a teaching affiliate of Oregon Health & Science University, where many of our faculty and physicians hold academic appointments. An ongoing commitment to evidence-based practice and critical review of the literature is part of the foundation of the residency program. All residents participate in scholarly activities under the mentorship and guidance of faculty. The program provides financial support for such projects and activities, which include regional and national American College of Physicians (ACP) posters and oral presentations; submission for publication of case reports, clinical vignettes and original clinical research; Principles of Quality Improvement projects, which often lead to presentable posters; quarterly practice examinations for American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) certifying examination preparation; senior presentations to the faculty and residents and annual resident In-Training Examination. In addition, residents are encouraged to take advantage of the many ongoing research opportunities based at PSVMC, and interested residents may devote elective time to such efforts. A partial list of clinical trials currently active at PSVMC is catalogued below.™
Providence St. Vincent residents have brought home both state and national awards for their clinical vignettes.
Drs. Karin Kuhl and Elke Lorence were invited to present their posters at the National ACP meeting in Philadelphia in April 2006. Dr. Kuhl’s poster, “D-Lactic Acidosis” and Dr. Lorence’s poster, “Refractory Thrombocytopenia in a Patient with Systemic Mastocytosis” were chosen by national ACP judges from 1400 entries.
At the Oregon American College of Physicians meeting in November 2005, a total of 12 residents gave presentations. Dr. Shelley Sanders won first prize for her Clinical Vignette Poster titled “Right Atrial Mass and Pulmonary Embolism: More than Meets the Eye.” Dr. Patricia Michels won second prize for her oral clinical presentation titled “Insidious Aspect of a Common Virus” and was invited to the Alaska state ACP meeting in 2006 to present her talk.
In April 2005, Man Tran, M.D. won the National ACP Abstract competition for his case of "Hepatic Hydrothorax without Ascites." Dr. Tran gave a PowerPoint presentation of this case at the 2006 National ACP (American College of Physicians) convention in San Francisco. He was one of 20 national abstract winners that were chosen from 1700 abstracts from 400 internal medicine residency programs.
Hall McGee, M.D., and Imran Mohamedy, M.D., represented Oregon at the ACP meeting, held in New Orleans in April 2004. Dr. McGee was one of 10 winners competing against 70 applicants from around the country. He was awarded for his poster presentation in the research division, examining the differences in patient care provided by residents over their course of training. Dr. Mohamedy was one of ten winners out of 100 applicants across the United States, winning for his poster presentation in the clinical vignette division. He presented a case of Creutzfeldt Jakob disease, a neurodegenerative condition that is both difficult to diagnose and not completely understood.
Providence St. Vincent Medical Center residents have won numerous awards for academic accomplishments through the ACP. In 2003, PSVMC residents won first prize in both the oral poster presentation of clinical vignettes and clinical research division at the national meeting of the American College of Physicians in New Orleans, an extraordinary accomplishment for any program, but especially one of this size. In addition, two other residents took second place finishes at the Oregon State ACP chapter annual meeting.
ABIM Board Passage Rate and In-Training Examinations:
The residency program is committed to achieving American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) certification for all of its residents. Every categorical resident receives a copy of the Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program (MKSAP) published by the American College of Physicians. Current three-year rolling ABIM pass rate is 95 percent. On the In-Training Examination, our program scored in the 8th Decile for all medicine programs nationally.
