Admission Providence Montessori School is a three-year progressive curriculum that includes kindergarten. Priority placement is available for 2-1/2 to 3 year old children. Each child is assigned to one of our seven Montessori classroom communities. For more information about our admission process, please call 503-215-2409, or e-mail montessorischool@providence.org.
The Learning Environment Children from the ages of 2-1/2 to 6 years work together in each classroom community. This provides an opportunity for children to develop compassion, service and leadership skills as they grow and learn. The School Year The Providence Montessori School year begins after Labor Day and runs through mid-June. On most school holidays, Holiday day camp is available for an additional fee (not necessary for All Day Montessori students on their longer school calendar). Children attend classes five days per week on individual schedules depending on the needs of the family. Options include an All Day Montessori community open 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., full-day sessions 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., or half-day sessions ending at noon. Before and after Enrichment Programs are also available 7 to 8:30 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m.
The Summer Program Providence Montessori operates Camp VIDA, a summer day camp from mid-June through August. A variety of experiences are offered in each session for children ages 2-1/2 to 6 years; there is an Elementary program too for children ages 7 to 12. Our curriculum supports each child's interests holistically. Each session children have the opportunity to garden, cook, make art, learn about science, and create music through song and instrument playing. In addition, Camp VIDA continues to support Montessori philosophy by encouraging grace and courtesy within each community as well as support each child's development of self-care and care of the environment. Camp VIDA observes a 1:10 ratio and all of our highly trained staff are CPR and pediatric First Aid trained. In addition, our staff attends extensive professional development classes each year. All-Day Montessori Program This multi-age classroom community for children ages 2-1/2 to 6 years remains together for the entire day. This allows for a more consistent schedule for children and fewer transitions throughout the day. During the course of the day, a broad variety of materials are available for hands-on exploration, affording children time to self-pace their intellectual, social and physical activities. Time and space is allotted for music, drama, and relaxed social interactions which provide a home-like atmosphere during the parents’ work day. After eating a lunch brought from home, younger children nap, giving older children a chance for further exploration of materials and special projects in a small group setting. After the core school day, children who remain experience a continuing program that blends Montessori curriculum with home-like atmosphere through additional high-quality and engaging materials. Enrichment Programs (Before & After School, Holiday Camp, Summer Program) Optional care is provided as part of our Enrichment Programs beyond the primary Montessori school day hours. Children must be enrolled and paid in advance to participate in any Enrichment program. You may enroll (or if necessary, withdraw) your child anytime during the school year with 30 days written notice. Several plans are offered to create as much flexibility as possible for families to choose the program best suited to fit their needs. An enrichment coordinator oversees and supervises both the enrichment and Before & After School programs, as well as the staff who work with them. Before & After School: By using a “pick a plan” approach, we maintain the reliability and quality of experience for the children enrolled. The Enrichment approach creates an atmosphere complimentary to the Montessori classroom education – expect to see guest artists and special events offered throughout the year. Photography, gardening, dance, and cultural exploration are some of the themes that will be used to build on the special interests of the children enrolled. Holiday Camp: On many of the non-school days, additional Enrichment experiences are available. Children will experience similar staff and events as in Before & After School programs.
