Overview

The Jean Baton Swindells Resource Center for Children and Families connects families, caregivers and friends of children with disabilities to resources, information and training. Families come to the Swindells Center seeking answers to many of the questions that surface in their everyday lives. We offer resources specific to disabilities and conditions, as well as information on respite options, recreation, educational options and other day-to-day issues.

Upcoming Events: Speakers Series Fall 2008 - All Events are Free of Charge and located at the Providence Child Center, 830 NE 47th Ave., Portland, OR 97213

  • Carla Judge, MAT, Brain Gym, presents "Helping your Child Succeed in School, Regardless of their Learning Differences or Learning Disabilities". This is a two-day seminar for parents only, on Friday, September 26th and Saturday, September 27th, from 9am to 4pm.
  • Michelle Raddish, MD, Developmental Pediatrician with Providence Neurodevelopmental Center for Children, presents "Medical Transitions for Children with Disabilities", Tuesday October 14th at 6:30 pm.
  • Peg Dawson, EDd, of Executive Skills in Children and Adolescents presents "What Parents Should Know and How they Can Help their Children with Disabilities Succeed at Home and School" on Monday, October 27th, at 2 pm.
  • Oregon Department of Developmental Disabilities representative to present "How to Access Developmental Disabilities Services for your Child with Disabilities" on Thursday November 13th, at 6:30 pm.

My Child's Life Care Notebook and Organizer - updated

The "My Child's Life Care Notebook and Organizer" is offered free to parents of children with disabilities. This organizer was developed to help families record and track the day-to-day needs of children with disabilities. Download My Child's Life Care Notebook and Organizer.

Training for your Life Care Notebook and Organizer - 2nd Tuesday of every month

Do you have piles of forms for your child that you need to keep -- but don’t know how to organize? Attend a Life Care Notebook training session on the 2nd Tuesday of every month. Bring all those papers, and we'll show you an easy way to have it all at your fingertips -- for for the doctor, for school, and for the babysitter! From 1 - 3 p.m., in the Swindells Center Conference Room at Providence Child Center. Learn more.

Lending library

The E.L. Wiegand Foundation Library, within the Swindells Resource Center, provides information on a wide range of childhood illnesses and conditions, as well as the care and parenting issues related to them. User-friendly information is available in many forms, including videos, audiotapes, periodicals, books, and staff-assisted computer searches. Topics include:

Internet access

The Swindells Center staff will research topics relevant to the needs of your child and family.

Community education events

The Swindells Center conducts training programs for families and caregivers of children with disabilities on topics such as behavior and development, communication, future planning, nutrition, education, inclusion strategies and child advocacy. Our presenters include local experts in various medical and educational fields as well as national and internationally known advocates for children and families.

Activities

The Swindells Center works closely with a variety of groups to develop resources and to enhance efforts to help families and communities deal more successfully with the challenges we all face together.

How to use the Swindells Center

All friends, families and caregivers are welcome to visit. We are open Monday through Thursday for drop-in visits from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. We are also available by appointment on Fridays. In addition, the staff provides support and resources by phone and e-mail.
