Lower Elementary Montessori

Lower Elementary Montessori
8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Providence Montessori School will offer a Lower Elementary Program beginning in the fall of 2009-10. The elementary program will be a mixed-age lower elementary program of children, six to nine years old, who have completed their Primary Montessori experience.  Our school gives preference to current Providence Montessori primary students who have completed 3 or 4 years of pre-K.  The students in the lower elementary program will be guided by an A.M.I. certified, Montessori elementary teacher.

The curriculum in the lower elementary classroom provides students opportunities for academic excellence in many areas including; math, geometry, language arts, history, geography, biology, art, music, foreign language, physical education, cooking/food preparation and gardening.

In addition to traditional academics, there is a focus on the development of valuable life skills beyond the scope of the primary program.  For example, the elementary students plan "going out" trips where they have the opportunity to experience the world around them.  These trips may include expeditions to the library to perform research for a special academic project, visits to a local business, interviews with an expert in a field of study, etc. The Montessori method encourages the cultivation of skills needed to select, plan, and implement steps along the way to accomplishing a goal.  All these things are done by the children themselves - working together.  A six year old will be learning how to identify and perform tasks needed to plan an outing in his/her first year, and will evolve into a third year, nine year old whose experience widens as he/she independently plans the entire trip.
