For more than 25 years, the eating disorders treatement program at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center has helped adults and adolescents recover from anorexia, bulimia and atypical eating disorders.
The Treatment Process Our treatment process begins with a thorough clinical assessment to address current and past eating practices and the physical and emotional consequences of these practices. This includes the evaluation of symptoms, such as depression, anxiety and substance use, as well as lifestyle factors such as social support from family and friends. As individuals approach or re-approach treatment, their readiness and the timing of treatment are also considered. Recovery is a process that requires persistence, courage and effective treatment resources.
Intensive treatment within the partial hospital program addresses strategies for change, helps individuals identify and manage their underlying feelings, and promotes honest self-exploration and accountability. Family and friends are included from the beginning of treatment. The involvement of one’s social support system is essential to effective treatment and relapse prevention.
Families participate in individual and group meetings each week. Physical recovery is continually assessed through indicators, such as vital signs, weights and laboratory tests. As progress occurs, individuals practice new skills by spending progressively more time in their home and community settings and less time in treatment. This pattern helps build confidence in one’s ability to manage symptoms in a normal lifestyle setting.
Transitioning from treatment is individually assessed, planned and negotiated with patients and family members. Typically this occurs after several weeks of behavioral stabilization. As patients progress toward recovery, they move toward outpatient therapy in their community setting. Staff assist with referral to experienced clinicians, if needed.
