Overview

The Oregon Medical Laser Center (OMLC) is one of the country’s leading biomedical laser research facilities and the only center of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. Based at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, OMLC researches and develops innovative uses for lasers to diagnose and treat heart attack, stroke and cancer; produces biocompatible tissues for research in the repair and replacement of diseased and injured arteries and skin; and has successfully developed a bandage that stops severe external bleeding, with future research focused on developing a similar bandage suitable for internal use. The center collaborates with Oregon State University, Portland State University and Oregon Health & Science University, as well as several commercial firms in many of its research endeavors.

News & Information

Major grant will support regenerative tissue research

The Oregon Medical Laser Center received a $1.5 million grant in April 2008 from the U.S. Army to participate in a national research collaborative aimed at helping wounded soldiers. OMLC Medical Director Kenton Gregory, M.D., is the lead researcher in the project that is dedicated to repairing battlefield injuries through the use of regenerative medicine, which involves using the body’s natural healing powers to restore or replace damaged tissue and organs. Read more about it here .

Providence Together magazine takes a close look inside of OMLC

Dr. Kenton Gregory and his OMLC researchers have compiled an impressive list of “firsts” in medicine: treating a heart attack patient with a laser, the world’s first replacement of heart arteries made from the natural protein elastin and others. Go behind the scenes to learn about the unique chemistry — energy, passion, vision and curiosity — that has propelled the “Idea Man and his team into national prominence in biomedical research.

Reader's Digest feature sings HemCon's praises: "Ultimate Bandage"

The OMLC's HemCon Bandage, an award-winning, innovative four-inch-square dressing that uses a substance from shrimp shells to help stop heavy bleeding, is saving lives in combat. It continues to receive national attention, including coverage in the March 2007 issue of Reader's Digest: "Battlefield Advances: Remarkable innovations in treating injured soldiers will ultimately benefit us all."
