Providence Hospice Bereavement Volunteer Description Providence Hospice Bereavement volunteers continue the compassionate caring and support of hospice by contacting survivors of hospice patients after the death. Bereavement volunteers provide a listening ear and emotional support, and report possible complicated grief reactions to the bereavement staff. Skills Hospice Bereavement volunteers are compassionate men and women of all ages and experiences who want to make a difference in the lives of people who have experienced grief and loss. Qualities needed for volunteering include dependability, patience, and good listening skills. Bereavement volunteers complete the 28-hour training program required of all hospice volunteers (offered 4 times each year: call for dates) and must pass a criminal background check. Bereavement volunteers must also complete a specialized 10-hour Bereavement Training Course. Each patient is unique, each volunteer assignment is different; but every patient and every assignment will touch your heart and bring something special into your life.

Support groups are convened four times per year and last for 8 weeks, and volunteers provide presence and support for children in the program.

Me Too and Company volunteers must complete the 10-hour Bereavement training course and an addtional 16-hour Children's Bereavement training. (The Manager of Bereavement and Community Services may make exceptions to these training requirements based upon the educational background and experience of the volunteer.)
